A sleeping pod has malfunctioned and has woken up one passenger, Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) 90 years early. Unable to cope with what could be almost 100 years of loneliness, Jim decides to wake up Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) from her sleep. What follows is sweet romance. But, when Aurora learns that Jim deliberately woke her up, her feelings of love turn into those of hate. Will Jim be able to convince Aurora? A beautifully made romantic movie set in an unlikely venue in a futuristic space ship. You will love every minute of this almost 2 hour long movie.
2 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
A movie that made great waves in 2004, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind features Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in lead roles. Joel (Carrey) learns that his love Clementine (Winslet) has had him erased from her memory. In anger, Joel decides to undergo the same medical procedure, to erase her from his mind.
But, as the treatment starts and he begins to slowly lose memories of her, he begins to have second thoughts. How will the movie end. Will Joel go through with the erase and move on? Or, can he reverse the memory loss and fall into love all over again? A beautiful movie that earned Jim Carrey plenty of laurels for portraying a deeply romantic soul. Kate Winslet is brilliant as usual, as she usually is with everything she does.
3 Inception (2010)
A dream within a dream within a dream. That is the strategy of a modern day mind thief who plans to plant an idea into the depths of the mind of a CEO. Christopher Nolan, director, supposedly took a year off just to warp his mind around the complex plot. You will probably interpret the movie differently, every time you watch it. And, you are almost guaranteed to watch it a few times at least.
The plot, screenplay and the visuals are all mind bending and you will have to stay focused to understand whether you are watching reality, a dream, a dream within a dream or a dream within multiple dreams.
A simply brilliant movie that will put your brain on overdrive. Easily Christopher Nolan’s best work. The same can be said of Leonardo DiCaprio as well. Ellen Page, now Elliot Page plays Ariadne, lending a very strong supporting role. Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Cilian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marior Cotillard all put in brilliant performances too!
A must watch movie if you were even intrigued by Bliss.
4 The Space Between Us (2017)
Set in the future, this movie’s plot revolves around a human born on Mars coming to earth for the first time. Aiding him on his adventure is a street-smart girl. It’s a beautiful movie that journals the protagonist’s existence on a foreign planet, when actually even the concept of his life began as an idea on planet earth.
Stars Gary Oldman and Asa Butterfield in leading roles.
5 Shutter Island
Shutter Island is a Martin Scorsese masterpiece. It’s about US Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) visiting a hospital for the criminally insane, on Shutter Island, to investigate the disappearance of a convict. To aid him is his deputy Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo). As Teddy investigates the mentally insane convict’s disappearance, he discovers a bizarre new world from within the depths of his own mind.
What is real? What is not real? Much like in Bliss, Shutter Island will have you scampering from a real world to an imaginary and hallucinated world. The climax is pure brilliance and you will never see what’s coming. When it does come, it will hit you hard with intrigue and shock. A must watch if you are into psychological thrillers.
Both Leonardo and Mark are brilliant, and so is Ben Kingsley as chief doctor on the Island’s prison.
6 Palm Springs (2020)
Palm Springs is a romantic comedy set in a repeating day time loop. A best man and bridesmaid hook up after a disastrous best man toast. But, just when the day looks salvaged, their nightmare of reliving the wedding day begins, again and again.
What do you do when you wake up on the same exact day over and over again? An easy watch with sweet romance and plenty of laughs, with the repeating time loop giving you enough from the sci-fi department as well.
7 The Sixth Sense (1999)
Haley Joel Osment is brilliant as Cole Sear. Cole sees dead spirits around him, as if they continued to walk the earth. To help him cope with the troubles that come from having such a burdening ability, he seeks out the help of a psychiatrist in Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis). Crowe and Sear get increasingly close and dependent on each other. But, how will it end. Will Sear come to peace with the ability to see spirits or will he reveal something so shattering that Crowe cannot even fathom understanding it fully.
A great movie by M. Night Shyamalan
8 Enemy (2013)
In Enemy, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a double role, taking on the roles of Adam and Anthony. Adam is a college professor stuck in a quiet daily routine. But, while watching a rental movie, Adam sees a look alike in Anthony. Curious to know more, he seeks out Anthony. They then realize that they are identical, right down to the scars that they share.
Adam becomes obsessed with Anthony. As their lives intertwine, Anthony too becomes obsessed with Adam, but in a way you will never expect.
Features an excellent performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.
9 Primer (2004)
Four friends work on an invention that accidentally becomes a time machine. Only one of the 4 friends has stumbled upon their innovation’s unexpected dual use. After great thought, he confides his discovery to one of other inventors. Together, they make a pact to keep it their little secret.
But, how will they use the time machine? Will they travel back and forth in time to manipulate the financial markets or will they use it for a larger philosophical purpose?
That’s Primer for you, a movie that explores what you will do next, when the possibilities are endless.
10 Her (2013)
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Scarlett Johansson, Her is about a reclusive writer who develops an ongoing romantic relationship with an operating system that seems to satisfy his every need.
Where the movie gets very interesting is when Theodore (Phoenix) seeks help from Samantha (Johansson), the voice of the operating system, about how to requite his love for her. This movie has everything you want to see after Bliss; drama, sci-fi and romance. Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant as the troubled and lonely writer and the screenplay and direction will keep you immersed in his thoughts and emotions through the entirety of this movie.
