Definitely not what we will call a ‘great’ movie. But, it certainly qualifies as popular choice for your weekly comedy movie night. If you are in the mood for more goofball action comedies, here are no less than 15 movies like Thunder Force!
Here are other recently released action comedy movies you might like. Movies like Nobody and movies like Boss Level.
15 Wacky Movies like Thunder Force – Easy to Watch Action Comedies
1 Shazam (2019)
Zachary Levi is hilarious as Shazam, a 15 year old boy superhero in an adult body. A young Foster boy is in search of his mother. But, somewhere along the way, he is entrusted with the superpowers of Shazam. This comedy action adventure movie is then about Shazam exploring his super-powers, finding his mother and also fighting off a super villain.
Just like in Thunder Force, the funniest parts of the movie are when Shazam goes about exploring his super powers. Remember, this is a 15 year old boy who suddenly is bestowed with inhuman powers. The result is pure fun. Zachary Levi is very convincing as the overgrown child who walks around in the ridiculous Shazam costume, complete with glowing insignia and power sleeves.
Shazam is rated 7.0 at IMDB, with over 250,000 votes cast by its fans.
2 Spy (2015)
It’s Melissa McCarthy again, just like in Thunder Force! In Spy, she is a deskbound CIA operative. But, when the job calls for her to go on the field, nothing but hilarious action follows. The movie also stars Rose Byrne, Jude Law and Jason Statham in leading roles.
There’s action, gadgets, spy cars, spy weapons and other gizmos to make this a thorough parody that is very similar to what you saw in Thunder Force. Melissa McCarthy is anything but a hot shot spy. But, somehow, she fumbles and stumbles her way through to get the job done, giving you plenty of laughs while doing it.
Spy also has a 7.0 rating with more than 230,000 votes cast at IMDB.
3 The MAN from U.N.C.L.E.
This comedy comes to you from the direction of Guy Ritchie. And, just like with any great Guy Ritchie movie, there’s witty action, smart actors and plenty of action and dry comedy.
Henry Cavill is Solo, a CIA agent. He is forced to partner with Illya, a KGB agent. CIA and KGB working together? What could possibly be their mission? Well, it is to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons that can end our world as we know it. Set in the 1960’s, The Man from U.N.C.L.E is as much about action as it is about comedy. Very nicely balanced out. It’s similar to Thunder Force in the sense that it is a wacky action comedy, but just with a more sophisticated style.
4 The Heat (2013)
The Heat is very similar to Thunder Force in the sense that Melissa McCarthy is paired up with an unlikely partner to fight crime. But, unlike how she partners with her high school friend in Thunder Force, she is paired up with an uptight FBI agent Ashburn, played by Sandra Bullock. Melissa McCarthy is Mullins, a foul mouthed slob of a cop from Boston. Together, they must use their contrasting personalities and approach to take down an evil drug lord.
The chemistry between the two will have you in splits. Sandra Bullock brings you the sarcastic humor while Melissa McCarthy brings you the silly and wacky humor.
There’s action, comedy, banter and countless scenes where the two partners against crime just can’t get along, but somehow still make it happen.
5 Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
What do you get when a group of intergalactic criminals are reeled in to stop a villain who is hell bent on purging the universe? A crazy, funny action adventure is what!
Chris Pratt is Peter Quill. In his band of small time criminals turned saviors are Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax, Groot, a tree stump (Vin Diesel), Rocket, a Jackal (Bradley Cooper) and others. This is the same movie studio (Marvel) that also brought you Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Avengers Assemble.
The team of misfit superheroes need to fight off Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). The chemistry between the various obnoxious team members will give you a lot of great laughs. When the comedy takes a back seat, there’s high octane action that we have always come to appreciate from the Marvel Studios. The visuals are breathtaking and mesmerizing.
Just a fun, wacky and light hearted superhero movie!
6 The Mask (1994)
You can’t really call The Mask a superhero. But, imagine how you or anybody could be if they lost all inhibitions and any sense of social fear. That’s what happens when someone wears the mask in this movie. Who gets to wear it? A schmuck who works at a bank. Jim Carrey plays that schmuck. Overnight, he goes from being a pushover bank employee to a dancing, singing flamboyant character who robs banks and simply just has a ball of a time around the city.
He has a love interest in Cameron Diaz, a dancer at a bar run by the mafia. That brings The Mask trouble with the bad guys. But, what should be a mob take down almost turns into a musical parody with the super eccentric mask going berserk on them. Nobody knows what hit who by the time the movie ends. Jim Carrey is phenomenal as the outrageously funny Mask.
If you want to watch an action comedy that it truly one of its kind, this gem from the 90’s should definitely go on your list of movies to watch after Thunder Force.
The Mask has more than 350,000 ratings at IMDB, with an average rating just shy of 7.
7 Megamind (2010)
Megamind is a wacky animated superhero movie. Voiced by Will Ferrell, Megamind is a lovable villain who is bored after flamboyant super hero Metro Man (Brad Pitt) bizarrely pursues a calling to make music. To keep himself busy, Megamind creates a new character called Tighten (Jonah Hill), just so he can be worthy of his super hero tag. But, when Tighten turns out to be more than what Megamind bargained for, a ton of action is required to right what has been wronged.
The comedy is very eclectic and unique. There’s nothing cliché about this movie at all. Tina Fey lends her voice to Roxanne Ritchie. Ben Stiller and David Cross lend their voices as well.
A fun comedy that has a cult following. Megamind has over 230,000 reviews at IMDB, with a strong rating of 7.2
8 Kick-Ass
What happens when someone wants to become a superhero even though they don’t have any superhero powers? Kick-Ass is what happens! Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is a quiet high school student who is largely unnoticed at his school. Tired of the routine, he one day decides that he is a superhero, complete with a custom designed costume. But, what does a superhero with no superhero powers do?
That’s for you to see in this comedy action movie. The movie has a 7.6 rating at IMDB, with more than half a million votes. Also featuring are Nicolas Cage, Chloe Grace Moretz, Evan Peters, Garrett M. Brown and a host of other funny characters who keep this movie ticking along nicely. It’s not exactly a parody but a refreshing take on what a superhero movie should be about, without any of the unbelievable powers that everyone takes for granted in superhero franchises.
9 Deadpool (2016)
Ryan Reynolds is Wade a.k.a Deadpool, a wisecracking smartass alter ego mercenary. He is immortal. But, he is also ugly. He sets out on a mission to find and punish the man who knowingly ruined his appearance.
This movie is all about witty dialogs and dark humor. Deadpool has a twisted sense of humor. It’s not for everyone. But, if you are a fan of it, you will love every second of this movie. There’s plenty of action and fantastic visual effects as well. A thorough entertainer that also had a very successful franchise sequel. Rumor has it that Deadpool 3 is on the way as well, possibly in 2021 itself.
10 Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
If you are a fan of Thor, you will love this comedy action film. Here, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is pitted against none other than The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) himself. To make matters worse, he must also fight off Hela (Cate Blanchett). Up against an ally turned foe and a demented goddess, will Thor be able to save Asgard from complete ruin? Just like with any Marvel movie, the graphics are mind blowing. The comedic timing is brilliant as well, breaking you up in laughter every now and then.
11 Ant-Man (2015)
Nobody thinks of an ant when they think of superheroes. But, what if you could shrink down to the size of an ant but have the power of many humans. That’s the super power that Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has. His mission? To collaborate with his mentor Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to pull off a heist that can essentially save the world from evil.
Humor and comedy is aplenty in Ant-Man. So is the hard-hitting action. Ant-Man has an impressive 7.3 rating at IMDB, with over half a million votes.
12 Ghostbusters (2016)
Another comedic action movie that makes for a fun and wacky watch. And, if you are a fan of Melissa McCarthy, your McCarthy marathon can continue with Thunder Force and some of the other movies on this list of movies to see after Thunder Force.
4 ghostbusting women brave their way into New York Times Square, where they must take on no less than 1,000 ghosts with nothing but trouble on their mind. The movie is a laugh riot and almost every character is funny and not to be taken seriously, the ghosts included!
Ghostbusters has a 6.6 rating at IMDB, with 200k+ votes.
13 Central Intelligence (2016)
Thunder Force was about two contrasting personalities pairing up with one another. The same concept goes in Central Intelligence. Here, its an all male team. Dwayne Johnson plays Bob Stone. Kevin Hart plays Calvin Joyner. Back in high school, Bob was the big fat kid that everybody made fun of. Calvin was the high school star. But, as adults, Bob is a freakishly muscular CIA agent whereas Calvin is an accountant living a quiet mild-mannered life.
When the two come together with their contrasting personalities that don’t even match their own bodies, let alone their partners, it’s a laugh riot.
If you liked Thunder Force for the chemistry between the two unlikely partners, Central Intelligence will definitely check off as a movie similar to Thunder Force.
14 Zombieland (2009)
Ok, Zombieland is not about superheroes or fighting crime. But, it is a laugh riot about a unlikely team fighting off zombies. Who’s in the team? A tough guy, an awkward student and two sisters. Together, they somehow make it work against the zombies.
The movie features Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Amber Heard and Abigail Breslin in lead roles.
Zombieland has the highest rating among all movies we have recommended here, coming in at an impressive 7.6 with over half a million votes at IMDB.
15 Ride Along (2014)
Another crime fighting partner pair up movie. And, another movie featuring the hilarious Kevin Hart. Here, he teams up with tough guy cop James (Ice Cube). What makes this movie very funny is that Ice Cube gives Ben (Kevin Hart) a very tough time as he is dating his sister. Moreover, Ben is a security guard, making him unworthy in the eyes of a tough and seasoned cop.
To continue to show his dislike for Ben, James takes Ben along for a ride along, where any citizen can ride along with a cop. But, this isn’t a ride along that takes them along on boring traffic stops. This is a high-octane crime busting ride along where they have to spring into action. Kevin Hart comes alive as the startled, hyper excited and dramatic partner to Ice Cube. There’s non-stop laughter.
Neither of them have super hero powers. But, boy do they bring the comedy. The last on our list of movies like Thunder Force, but definitely good enough to be the very first on our list!
