6 Inspiring Women-Led Movies like Moxie (2021)
1 Legally Blonde (2001)
Reese Witherspoon plays Elle Woods. She is a fashion queen and the epitome of what most people expect off a blonde. But, when she is dumped by her boyfriend who ditches her for law school, she follows suit, enrolling in the same law college. At the snobbish law school, she proves she’s a beauty with the brains. A light hearted comedy and coming of age movie with plenty of laughs. There’s plenty of romance too. Luke Wilson and Selma Blair provide the strong supporting cast to make this movie a fantastic watch.
2 Hidden Figures (2016)
It’s early years in the NASA space program. There’s an intense race to put the first man in orbit and the Soviets have the lead. But, NASA’s catalyst comes from an unlikely source, three African-American women who crunch numbers like no one else. These human computers break through race and gender barriers to rise through NASA’s ranks, to provide a contribution that will change America’s space history as we know it.
It is based on the lives of three real women who instantly became American heroes after this movie came out. Just like in Moxie, you will find the ascension of these three women inspiring and motivational.
3 Battle of the Sexes (2017)
How did 90 million people around the world tune in to watch a tennis match in 1973? It was because it was being played by a former women’s world champion against a former men’s champion. It literally was the battle of the sexes. Emma Stone plays Billie Jean King, the prodigious tennis player. Steve Carell plays Bobby Riggs, men’s ex-champion and a hustler by current profession.
The tennis match is played to showcase equality of the sexes. But, the movie weaves a beautiful story off the court as well. Billie Jean King explores her sexual orientation while Bobby fights the demons of his gambling addiction. There’s comedy, drama and a biography. If you liked movies about feminism and equality, this is a must watch.
4 North Country (2005)
What can you expect when a woman first tries to work in the mines? Alongside men? In the 1980’s? You guessed right. Sexual harassment is what happened. But, what you might not have expected is for that woman to stand tall and fight back. North Country is a fictitious retelling of the first successful sexual harassment lawsuit filed and won in the United States.
It’s a great movie about a landmark cultural and legal event in the country. Features incredible performances by Charlize Theron, Jeremy Renner, Frances McDormand and more.
5 A League of Their Own (1992)
A movie that stars Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell. If that got you excited, wait till you hear the plot. It’s World War II. The men are defending the nation in foreign lands. Baseball is about to die. Baseball club owners decide to keep the leagues running with women players. Scouts are out. Two incredibly talented sisters make the same team. The manager (Tom Hanks) is a drunk who can’t get his act together without being, well, drunk. Yet, the team works. The women’s baseball league works. Until time comes to call it curtains on the league. But, can one of the sisters do something so incredible to change its fortunes?
A fantastic movie if you like sports comedies and dramas, with women at the helm.
6 Erin Brockovich (2000)
Erin Brockovich is an unemployed mother who dresses scantily. Hell bent on seeking employment, she manages to get work at a law firm. There, she spearheads a lawsuit against a large power company that has been willfully polluting the waters of a small community.
A movie that won 1 Oscar and was nominated for no less than 59 awards. Julia Roberts is brilliant as Erin Brockovich, the trash talking no-nonsense single mom. Albert Finney is Ed Masry, the law firm owner who carefully manages the talents and eccentricity of Erin. Directed by Steven Soderbergh. An absolute must watch if you love movies with a female lead. Julia Roberts won Best Actress for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich.
