1 Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
What happens to a family of 14 when the mother goes off on a book tour? The father tries to step in. Cheaper by the Dozen is the comedy that follows the hilarious failings of the father. Steve Martin plays Tom Baker, the head of the Baker family. Hillary Duff, Bonnie Hunt, Piper Perabo and Tom Welling make up some of the other members of the Bakers. It’s simple fun the whole family can enjoy. The movie was so successful that they made a sequel just 2 years after the original.
2 Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
The Late Robin Williams plays Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire in this classic comedy. After a bitter divorce with Miranda Hillard (Sally Field), Daniel decides to disguise himself as Mrs. Doubtfire, a female housekeeper, in order to spend time with his three adorable children. What follows is a series of hilarious scenes where the kids enjoy the housekeeper’s jolly and loving presence. But, can Daniel pull of his disguise or will it all come apart in the end?
A must watch comedy with the kids. Put it at the top of your list.
3 Yours, Mine & Ours (2005)
Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo take the lead in this family comedy drama. Two widows fall in love and decide to marry. The problem? She has 10 children and he has 8. And, they don’t want the marriage to happen. What follows is a chaotic but very funny coming together of the families. Eventually, love prevails and everyone is happy. What makes this a great comedy is that Dennis Quaid is an Admiral in the movie. So, he runs his family with a military type style, with charts and salutes. Rene Russo on the other hand is a free spirit, letting her children run amok. It’s really fun to see the two parenting styles come together.
4 Big Daddy (1999)
Adam Sandler plays Sonny in Big Daddy. Sonny is lazy and wants to impress his girlfriend. He thinks it is a good idea to adopt a kid to impress Layla (Joey Lauren Adams), as she loves kids. But, the arrangement takes an unexpected turn as Sonny and the kid develop a strong bond. It’s a funny movie with a lot of beautiful moments. There are several funny supporting actors in Jon Stewart, Rob Schneider and Steve Buscemi. An easy watch.
5 RV (2006)
Another movie with Robin Williams at the helm. He plays Bob Munro, the head of a dysfunctional family. On a road trip to the Colorado Rockies, they run into a community of bizarre and weird campers. How the family deals with all the eccentric characters will have you in splits from time to time. Cheryl Hines very competently plays the mother and second fiddle to Williams.
An adventure comedy movie the entire family will love.
6 Daddy Day Care (2003)
Charlie (Eddie Murphy) and Phil (Jeff Garlin) are laid off. They can’t find jobs. What do they do? They start a day care center! What follows is just hilarious incidents as they struggle to get their act together. They use very unconventional but effective ways to care for the children in their care. A side plot focuses on the comedic competition between Daddy Day Care, Charlie and Phil’s day care establishment Vs. the snobbish Chapman Academy that takes itself a bit too seriously.
The plot, Eddie Murphy’s acting and the adorable performances by all the children will keep you smiling almost throughout the movie.
