Free Guy has easily become the most successful summer film of 2021. That’s quite an achievement, even if it did on a weak playing field. The action comedy from the makers of Deadpool feature Ryan Reynolds as a NPC who takes matters into his own hands in the simulated video game world he lives in. If you liked how reality met virtual reality in Free Guy, you will love these 6 movies like Free Guy.
Talking about Sci-Fi movies, did you like Mark Wahlberg’s recently released Infinite? Here are 8 movies like Infinite!
6 Simulated VR Movies like Free Guy
1 Ready Player One (2018)
Stars: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn
Ready Player One is a cult movie in the gamer niche. Directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, the 2 hours 20 minute long movie grossed an impressive $137 Million at the box office.
It’s set in doomsday 2045. The only respite for humankind is the salvation they seek in an alternative VR universe called OASIS. When the virtual world’s founder dies, he posthumously offers his great fortune to a player who can find the Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the universe.
What follows is an adventure that will take you through great fantasies, discovery of new worlds and a lot of mystery and danger. A movie that will constantly keep you guessing and surprised. If you liked Free Guy, this is almost an automatic watch, if you haven’t seen it already that is!
2 The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Stars: Craig Bierko, Gretchen Mol, Armin Mueller-Stahl
The Thirteenth Floor didn’t make a lot of noise at the box office. Grossing just $11.8 Million, it didn’t last long in the cinemas either. But, the movie is definitely worth a watch if you are interested in movie characters who are living in a simulated environment. The 7+ rating at IMDB vouches for this movie’s ability to create mystery and intrigue.
The plot revolves around a man who wakes up in a house where his boss is murdered. He can’t remember if he committed the murder. Confounding his confusion are other characters who believe they are real in a virtual reality world. The plot is a little confusing at times. But, that just adds to the suspense and intrigue this movie intended to create for you.
3 Escape Room (2019)
Stars: Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis
Ok, so this isn’t a movie about a digital simulation or virtual world. But, it is definitely about people having no idea where they are what they must do, just like in Free Guy! Escape Rooms are meant to be fun. Not for the 6 thrill seeking youngsters in this movie though. They all convene in a room in a strange building for a chance to win $10,000 by solving puzzles and getting out of an escape room. But, very soon, it goes from a game to a nightmare about life and death. Who will come out unscathed and why are they all even in this sadistic nightmare in the first place?
A good suspense movie that grossed an impressive $57.0 with a largely unknown cast. If you love escape rooms or mystery rooms, this is definitely one movie you don’t want to miss!
4 The Maze Runner (2014)
IMDB 6.8 | 434K Ratings
Stars: Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter
Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) finds himself in the midst of a puzzling labyrinth. He has no past memory. All he knows is that he has to run the maze to escape it. But, it isn’t easy as the maze changes continually.
He recruits the only female runner as his companion and must try to convince the others stranded in this maze world that he is the one who knows the way out to freedom. A unique movie so successful that it led to a whole franchise (trilogy) made out of it. It’s an eerie movie with a dystopian theme. There’s definitely no comedy like what you enjoyed in Free Guy. But, if its intrigue and mystery you are after, this is a great watch.
5 Gamer (2009)
Stars: Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall, Ludacris
Gamer is a violent movie set in a dark simulated environment. Kable (Gerard Butler) is on death row. Every week, he and his fellow inmates are forced to participate in a very violent online game. Somewhere, Kable and his fellow inmates are just simulated characters to gamers. But, there’s another force trying to end this dark virtual reality world where lives are at stake. Who will come out winning at the end?
The violence in the movie is not at all tempered. The script is a little flimsy. But, if you can forgive all that to let a Sci-Fi plot set its premise, it definitely isn’t a bad watch. And, it’s sort of similar to Free Guy, just with a violent theme.
6 Bliss (2021)
Stars: Owen Wilson, Salma Hayek, Nesta Cooper
This is a movie where Greg (Owen Wilson) struggles to differentiate between reality and simulation. Compounding his confusion is a mysterious character named Isabel (Salma Hayek), a woman who Greg doesn’t even know is real or simulated. It’s more like a Sci-Fi drama that can get a bit mopey at times. But, it does explore the theme of living in a virtual world, just like what you saw in Free Guy.
Director Mike Cahill intentionally made the movie in such a way that it is up to you to decide and differentiate the ambiguity that separates the real from the virtual world. The Bliss received quite poor reviews. But, it made a good attempt at exploring a possible new niche in Sci-Fi drama. If Bliss doesn’t interest you, these movies like Bliss might give you another similar movie suggestion for Free Guy.
