6 Rom-Com Dramedies like Good on Paper (2021)
1 Along Came Polly (2004)
Ben Stiller is Reuben Feffer. He is an insurance risk analyst who is married to Lisa Kramer (Debra Messing). But, almost just as soon as the honeymoon begins, Reuben finds out that his wife cheated on him with a vain scuba diver. Heartbroken, he heads back home and seeks refuge in the company of his friend Sandy (Phillip Seymour Hoffman). Along the way, he also runs into Polly (Jennifer Aniston), an old school friend.
He is attracted to Polly but Polly is far from normal. She is quirky, odd and unpredictable. But, can Reuben manage to win her love? Reuben’s chances to woo Polly are derailed when Lisa suddenly returns, seeking forgiveness. Also in his way are his own neurotic tendencies to weigh the pros and cons about everything in life, just like he does with his insurance work.
A rom-com that will keep you smiling and laughing almost throughout the movie. A star studded cast that also includes Alec Baldwin. A chaotic love story, just like what you say in Good on Paper.
2 The Break-Up (2006)
You don’t need to get into a new relationship to find out that something’s wrong with your significant other. Sometimes, you find out while you are still in it. The Break-Up is a comedic take on how a breakup is handled.
Gary (Vince Vaughn) and Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) have had it with each other. They just can’t get along anymore. They decide to break up. But, there’s a catch. They together own the luxurious condo they live in and their finances just don’t allow them to move out. So what do they do? They decide to live as roommates.
But, the new arrangement goes anything but smoothly. From trying to make each other jealous to just downright making life miserable for the other, both engage in petty acts of revenge. It just results in plenty of hilarious moments. There’s a bit of drama too, as things do get serious from time to time. But all in all, this is a rom-com, even though its about a break-up. The supporting cast is very funny as well. There’s Joey Lauren Adams as Brooke’s friend while Jon Fabreau and Jason Bateman are all part of a loud and funny couple’s friends entourage.
3 Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
Miles (George Clooney) is a divorce lawyer who specializes in saving the fortunes of philandering wealthy husbands, from their gold digger wives. Miles takes on the case of Rex who is married to Marilyn (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Using his legal brilliance, Miles makes sure Marilyn gets nothing out of her divorce with Rex.
But, Marilyn won’t go down easily. She quickly marries an oil tycoon to salvage her financial standing. And, she wants more. And, her revenge involves a plot where she makes Miles fall in love with her. Directed by the Coen brothers, this is a smooth rom-com, the kind you can expect from the likes of George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
4 Just Go with it (2011)
Adam Sandler is Danny, a wealthy and successful plastic surgeon. He is also a philanderer. But, when he falls head over heels for a young bombshell in Palmer (Brooklyn Decker), he is caught in quite a quandary. Palmer thinks Danny is married and divorced and with kids. So, to keep the ruse going to keep his chances alive, Danny recruits his clinic’s secretary Katherine (Jennifer Aniston) and her two kids.
If that weren’t enough to keep him busy, he also has to take all of them on a vacation to Hawaii. Eddie (Nick Swardson), an annoying friend of Danny joins in on the vacation, self-proclaiming himself to be Katherine’s new husband.
It’s just one hilarious situation after the other. With the kids, with the office secretary and with his teenage love. The child actors have done a phenomenal job. There’s a guest performance from Nicole Kidman as well. Just a whacky rom-com that makes for an easy watch, just like how you enjoyed Good on Paper.
5 Knocked Up (2007)
The movie’s title says it all! Ben (Seth Rogen) meets Alison (Katherine Heigl) at a club when Alison is out with her sister Debbie (Leslie Mann). One thing leads to another and they end up sleeping with each other, even though they are hardly each other’s type.
But, what they didn’t count on was the one night stand leading up to a pregnancy. Alison decides that she wants to keep the baby. They then try to make things work. But, their worlds are very different.
Ben lives with a bunch of weird roommates who want to make a living out of a website that tells people at exactly what times nude scenes in a movie come on. Among Ben’s friends are characters played by Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill and others. On Alison’s side, she has her sister Debbie and her husband Pete (Paul Rudd).
Besides the odd couple trying to make it work, there’s the comedic connection between the couple trying to interact and get along with the people in their partners’ lives. A dysfunctional rom-com movie just like Good on Paper, but entertaining all the same!
6 The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)
Steve Carell is Andy, a 40 year old sales associate at an electronic store. One night while playing cards, his coworker buddies (Paul Rudd, Romany Malco and Seth Rogen) stumble on the fact that is Andy is a virgin, at 40 years of age. They immediately begin to goad him to do the deed. But, none of Andy’s friends have their relationship act together themselves. So, any advice they give isn’t very sound.
Taking heed to their advice, Andy runs into some hilarious encounters where he is just not able to shed his virgin tag. But then, finally, things could fall in place with Trish (Catherine Keener), a single mom. Or, will it? Very funny movie, from start to finish.
A movie that also features Elizabeth Banks, Leslie Mann, Kat Dennings, Jane Lynch, Jonah Hill among a long list of other supporting others.
