6 Unpredictable and Unusual Heist Movies like Naked Singularity
1 Inception (2010)
IMDB 8.8 | 2.2 Million Ratings
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Ken Watanabe
Director & Writer: Christopher Nolan
Inception is #13 on IMDB’s greatest ever movies list. The plot is incredibly imaginative and will test your cognitive skills as you sink into the movie’s brilliance. It is about a con-man who can steal people’s ideas, from the deepest places in their minds. But this time, he has to do quite the opposite – plant an idea that will then return the same financial fortune a great heist can.
The movie grossed almost $300 Million worldwide. It’s very unusual in the sense that it takes you on a fantasy trip inside of your own mind, as you try to figure out what’s real and what isn’t. The CGI is mind-altering as well. If you have watched it already, it might be time for a re-watch. There’s little chance it can disappoint.
2 Inside Man (2006)
Stars: Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer
Director: Spike Lee
When a movie is directed by Spike Lee, you know you are in for anything but the usual. Inside Man revolves around the efforts of a cunning and clever heist mastermind (Clive Owen) and a tough and gritty detective in Denzel Washington. Where the plot veers off the usual shootout style or car chase heists is with the involvement of a mysterious broker (Jodie Foster) who works between people in very high places. Who is really carrying out the heist? A question you will be pondering about right till the very end, when it all comes unraveled in spectacular style. An unpredictable plot that takes abrupt turns, but without throwing you off of the ride!
Jodie Foster’s performance is brilliant. And, that’s saying a lot as Denzel and Clive Owen are exceptional as well.
3 Now You See Me (2013)
Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Common, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher
A magician named Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) leads a team of 3 fellow magicians. Together, they call themselves the Four Horseman. While their magic is spectacular, their cause is even more interesting. With every mesmerizing performance they put on for wowed audiences, they also drain the accounts of the corruptly rich to distribute the heist to the audience.
Hot on the pursuit of the magic-performing Robin Hoods is FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) and a detective from the Interpol (Melanie Laurent). Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are part of the supporting cast as well, delivering strong performances.
The most unusual heist movie on this list for sure!
4 Man on a Ledge (2012)
Stars: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Mandy Gonzalez
There’s a lot you can do by standing on the ledge on the highest floor of one of New York’s most famous hotels. With almost the whole world’s spotlight on Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington), a former cop, a heist is at play in the background. Trying to figure it out all is Lydia Spencer (Elizabeth Banks), a detective who knows something isn’t right about this jumper drama on a ledge.
A jumper thriller. And, like what you saw in Naked Singularity, it’s about robbing corrupt people who shouldn’t have got rich in the first place!
5 Panic Room (2002)
Stars: Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker
A mother (Jodie Foster) and her daughter (Kristen Stewart) have just moved into a large brownstone apartment in New York. When three intruders break into their home, they seek refuge in the home’s impenetrable panic room.
But, the intruders are not after what’s in the house. They want something that’s right inside the panic room. It’s a game of cat and mouse. Adding to the thrill of this unusual heist is that each of the three intruders has very different personalities, often conflicting with one another.
The movie grossed a very impressive $95 million worldwide. The kind of movie you want to watch with some fresh popcorn!
6 The Lookout (2007)
Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode, Isla Fisher
The Lookout only made $4.6 Million at the box-office. But, that figure does absolutely no justice to this movie’s caliber as a unusual heist entertainer.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Chris. Once a promising athlete, Chris suffers an accident that leaves him with severe brain damage. He now has to write everything down. His deficits only allow him to get a job as a lowly janitor in a bank. But, a janitor who writes down a lot of detail about his work at a bank is indispensable for someone who wants to rob the bank. Chris’s friends convince Chris to be the inside man.
It’s a heist movie that is also about a moral dilemma, much like what was attempted in Naked Singularity.
