1 The Intern (2015)
Robert De Niro is Ben Whittaker, a 70 year old widower. He is terribly bored with retirement. So, when he sees an opportunity to intern at a company that runs an online fashion site, he says why not! The company is run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), a driven but workaholic entrepreneur. Ben doesn’t know that the company created the position purely for cosmetic reasons. He is given meaningless tasks that he dutifully performs. But then, a friendship begins to form between Ben and Jules. Jules finds Ben to be full of wisdom and support, something she could use in her life.
It is a wholesome comedy with great acting performances by De Niro and Anne Hathaway. Reno Russo makes a cameo every now and then, as an office masseuse who is romantically interested in Ben. It’s about an unlikely but strong friendship.
It’s a feel good movie and a very good one at that. It has a respectable 7.1 rating at IMDB, with more than 200,000 ratings.
2 The Intouchables (2011)

It’s Intouchables and not Untouchables for a reason. This is a French movie. Even if you don’t speak French, we highly recommend that you watch it. There’s always subtitles.
A wealthy but aged millionaire has become a quadriplegic after an accident. Though he has all the money he needs, he is unhappy about life in a wheelchair. When seeking a caretaker for himself, he decides to give the opportunity to a young black man from the projects.
What follows is a unusual but beautiful friendship between the two. Driss (Omar Sy), the caretaker, is able to let Phillippe (Francois Cluzet) appreciate life again. The movie shares a lot of similarities to what you saw in Here Today. Different age and socio economic backgrounds don’t mean two people can’t be friends, and great friends at that.
This movie is exceptionally popular with an 8.5 rating at IMDB, the highest for a movie on this list. It has close to 800,000 ratings. The movie’s popularity made Hollywood come up with its own version of it, featuring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. That’s the next movie on our list by the way.
3 The Upside (2017)
Please read about The Intouchables above. The Upside is essentially an English remake of it. Hollywood adds its own little spin to the story but the concept is pretty much the same. A man with a criminal record trying to show a disabled and distressed wealthy man to live, as his hired caretaker. Kevin Hart brings his unique brand of loud and theatrical comedy that will have you in splits from time to time. Bryan Cranston is great too, as the cynical older man who slowly begins to smile and appreciate life.
If we had to pick between the French original and the English remake, we would still recommend the original made in French. But, if it has to be in English, The Upside is an obvious choice.
The Upside has a 7.0 rating with close to 50,000 ratings at IMDB.
4 Neighbors (2014)
Ok, so neighbors isn’t about friendship. In fact, it is about quite the opposite. But, it is about generational differences like you saw in Here Today. And, it is a thorough comedy.
Kelly (Rose Byrne) and Mac (Seth Rogen) are young parents with a young daughter. When an entire fraternity moves into the house next door, they initially try to look cool and friendly to Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron), the Fraternity president. All they want in return is for the frat house to keep it down, so their daughter can sleep in peace. But, night after night, the Fraternity violates their pact.
Kelly and Mac then call the cops. When the cops rat them out as complainants, the Frat boys seek revenge – the pranky kind. What follows is good comedy as the clueless young parents do their best to match the frat boys’ every moves, only to fail again and again. But then, they are able to pull something off that might shut the frat house for good. Or, can they?
It’s a decent comedy to watch if you are a fan of or can at least handle a bit of silly fraternity comedy from time to time.
5 The Bucket List (2007)
The Bucket List is a movie very similar to Here Today. Just like how Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish came from very different backgrounds, two terminally ill men come together as hospital roommates. One is a Carter (Morgan Freeman), a mechanic diagnosed with cancer. The other is Edward (Jack Nicholson), the owner of the hospital, who grudgingly has to share the hospital room to follow hospital rules on room sharing.
Initially, the two disgruntled and restless men hate each other. But, both fighting cancer, they form a great and unlikely bond as friends. Edward is eccentric and childlike and unrestricted by money. Carter on the other hand is sensible and cautious. Both know that they have limited time. So, they set out to cross of items on their bucket list, something that takes them on great adventures. There’s plenty of comedy and a lot of quality drama as well.
As far as acting performances are concerned, you have two heavyweights in Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. A thoroughly enjoyable movie. It has a 7.4 rating at IMDB, with close to 250,000 ratings.
6 The Wedding Ringer (2015)
Doug (Josh Gad) is about to get married to Gretchen (Kaley Cuoco of The Bing Bang Theory fame). But, he’s got a big problem. He has no friends. So, no best man and definitely no groomsmen. To make matters worse, he has told his fiancé that his marriage party is going to be 8 strong, with a best man and 7 groomsmen.
That’s where Jimmy Callahan comes in. He runs a company called Best Man Inc. As the name suggests, he puts himself and his friends up for hire as best man and groomsmen. Jimmy clearly tells Doug that this is a strict business arrangement. But, as their charade slowly comes under suspicion, they have to work together much more than they bargained to do, leading to multiple hilarious situations.
There are a lot of laugh out loud scenes as the two contrasting personalities try to pull it off as best friends.
The Wedding Ringer has a 6.6 rating at IMDB, with more than 70,000 ratings.
7 The Devil Wears Prada
Another drama comedy that makes our list because of camaraderie between the two leading actors, despite a large generation gap. Meryl Streep is Miranda Priestly, a demanding and very successful editor-in-chief of one of the world’s leading fashion magazines. Anne Hathaway plans Andy Sachs, a just out of college graduate who lands the coveted job as assistant to Miranda. But, the dream job is anything but like how she imagined it. There’s a lot of drama and subtle comedy in the interactions between the snooty Miranda and innocent Andy. A sub-plot focuses on Andy’s life and her love interest in Nate (Adrian Grenier). There’s also a running rivalry that Andy has with Emily (Emily Blunt), who has always been the personal assistant of choice to Miranda.
Just a great comedy that we are sure you will enjoy, particularly for the interaction between two very contrasting personalities in Miranda and Andy. There’s a lot in common to Here Today in that regard.
