A seemingly harmless comment escalates into mounting frustration in the hood, with racial tensions showing its ugly face. The heat isn’t helping either. As the day progresses, frustrations erupt into full blown violence.
A movie that shows how little it takes for equilibrium to be shattered in an environment like Brooklyn. Though there’s violence, there’s also a generous sprinkling of comedy as well. That’s the way life goes in the hood.
3 Menace II Society (1993)
Tyrin Turner plays Caine Lawson, a young man who has just graduated high school. But, he wants to escape the crime, drugs and violence in the projects in Watts, CA, where he lives.
But, as you will see, it is easier said than done. A film that shows how difficult it is to break free from the misfortune that comes from being born in the projects or ghettos.
4 Juice (1992)
Stars Tupac Shakur, Omar Epps, Jermaine Hopkins and Khalil Kain, Samuel L. Jackson and Queen Latifah in prominent roles. 4 teenage friends from Harlem witness a shootout where someone in their neighborhood is taken out.
They are frustrated that their community gets no respect. So, they decide to earn the respect themselves. Juice they call it, the respect they want. The first order of business for them is to rob a convenience store. But, their self initiation goes horribly wrong and things completely spiral out of control.
5 Friday (1995)
Starring Chris Tucker and Ice Cube in lead roles, Friday takes a comedic approach to showcasing tough life in the hood. Craig (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker) owe a local bully $200. It’s due on Friday. If they don’t pay, there’s going to be no Saturday. With no job, no prospects and just trouble all around them, Smokey and Craig try to figure it out before Friday comes around.
There’s also psychotic girlfriends, nagging parents and crazy neighbors in the mix. A movie that will have you chuckling or laughing from start to finish.
6 Clockers (1995)
Based on an acclaimed Richard Price novel, Clockers is directed by Spike Lee. It revolves around the life of Strike, a small time drug pusher. When someone is shot down in their neighborhood, Spike’s brother turns himself in for the crime. But, Detective Rocco Klein doesn’t buy his confession. He instead turns his attention to Strike.
Who did what? Why is Strike’s brother taking the fall for his brother? To complicate matters, there’s a third brother involved as well. Amidst all this tension, the three brothers have to deal with the wrath of their drug lord Rodney (Delroy Lindo) as well.
An intriguing movie that will keep you guessing from start to finish. A whodunnit in the hood.
7 End of Watch (2012)
End of Watch showcases life in the hood in South Central LA. What makes this movie unique is that it is shown from the perspective of two cops out on patrol. Officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Michael Pena (Mike Zavala) encounter a variety of calls while out on their shift. From racial tensions between Blacks and Latinos to domestic violence to trouble caused by a Mexican drug cartel, they see it all, in just a few hours of duty. It all boils down to a call where their lives are put in danger.
Shot in a documentary style of filmmaking, this movie bring you as close as you can get to life in crime infested LA. Also stars Natalie Martinez, Anna Kendrick and Frank Grillo in prominent roles.
