In Body Brokers, Utah (Jack Kilmer) joins a substance abuse rehab center. While there, he learns how addiction rehab is a multi-billion scam industry. He then gets in on it. Rehab centers recruit addicts to get more addicts. More addicts gets them more government money. They use some of that money to pay off addicts who blow the cash on, you guessed it, drugs. 1 The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
The Wolf of Wall Street is based on the real life of Jordan Belfort, a trading company owner who made it to the cover of Forbes magazine, with that exact moniker under his name. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort and does it quite brilliantly. His partner in crime is Donnie Azoff (Johan Hill). A 20 man trading firm quickly grows into a 250 strong monster that makes waves in the financial markets.
But, the success isn’t clean. The devious trading tactics brings in the attention of the FBI. There’s drugs, women, lavish parties and very extravagant living. Will Jordan and Donnie be able to siphon off all their earnings to some European bank or will they lose it all to the FBI? The movie also features great performances by Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey and Jon Favreau. One of the biggest movies to come out in 2013.
2 Catch Me If You Can (2002)
If you are looking for movies like Body Brokers and are also a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, you are doubly lucky today. Second on our list is this another popular movie of DiCaprio. Leonardo plays Frank Abagnale Jr. Just 21 years old, Frank is a brilliant con artist. First, he is a doctor. Then, lawyer, then pilot. But, his money making scams capture the attention of Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). Carl then makes it his life’s obsession to take down Frank Jr. It’s a cat and mouse game that goes right down to the wire.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, this movie has everything. Scams, charm, humor, action, romance, a thrilling plot and brilliant acting performances. Enjoy memorable appearances by Martin Sheen, Amy Adams, James Brolin, Jennifer Garner and Christopher Walken who plays Fran Abagnale Sr.
3 I Care a Lot (2020)
I Care a Lot is a recent Netflix movie that is quite similar to Body Brokers. It exposes how scams are run in the Legal Guardian industry. Someone old is declared unfit to care for themselves. They don’t have family. So, the government appoints a legal guardian. The legal guardian then puts them in a home, sells off their estate and profits. They could care less about the hapless senior they take on.
But, in I Care a Lot, Marla Grayson’s (Rosamund Pike) latest mark Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest) doesn’t go down easy. Jennifer is tied to a Russian mafia leader in Roman Lunyov (Peter Dinklage). When Jennifer is put in a home against her will and has her diamonds taken from her safety deposit box, Marla’s scam comes to the spotlight. Will Roman take down Marla? Will Marla take out Roman instead? Or, is there a completely different twist to the tale? Watch I Care a Lot to find out for yourself! It’s a comedy crime thriller laced with a dark theme.
4 The Big Short (2015)
The Big Short exposes the story behind the mother of all scams, the 2008 global financial crash. It all revolves around how a peculiar hedge fund manager named Michael Burry discovered that the US Mortgage backed financial instruments were all ticking time bombs. In an unprecedented move, he bets against these mortgage backed securities. Big banks laugh at him and gladly write bespoke contracts to help him bet against the mortgage industry. But, a few other curious investors catch on to Michael’s moves. Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell and Brad Pitt all play pivotal roles as investors and middle men who know that the financial markets are going to come crashing down, hard.
A brilliant movie that will satisfy your craving for movies that expose scams. And, it is also one that will definitely make you more financially literate than you are now! A fantastic edutainment experience.
5 American Hustle (2013)
The movie’s starts off with a disclaimer that says “Some of this actually happened”. It showcases the life of Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his seductive partner in crime in Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). Bradley Cooper plays Richie DiMaso, an eccentric FBI agent who decides to use the con-couple to expose a murky world of corruption that features politicians, power brokers and the mafia.
This is a glamorous movie with brilliant acting performances. The support cast is full of big names too. From Jeremry Renner as a corrupt mayor to Jennifer Lawrence as a volatile Mrs. Rosenfeld to Michael Pena who plays a decoy Sheik, there’s plenty of interesting characters to keep you hooked until the very end.
Will the FBI agent and couple trio land the big sharks or will they blow their cover and lose their lives? That’s American Hustle for you.
6 War Dogs (2016)
How can two 20 year old guys, one a former massage therapist no less, land a $300 Million Pentagon arms contracts? War Dogs is how! The movie shows how the U.S. Government will deal with just about anyone who can help them sell guns to sources that they can’t directly deal with. We obviously can’t quite call this a scam industry. But, it comes pretty darn close to blurring the lines on what is ethical.
Directed by Todd Phillips of The Hangover series fame, the movie takes a jovial tone to narrate an international arms trade story that is loosely based on a true story. It is not quite a comedy though. It’s just funny because something like this can really happen in America. A couple of 20 year old guys naively selling guns in foreign lands, not knowing a thing about what to expect from their buyers.

8 Inside Job (2010)
While The Big Short movie we suggested earlier gives you an entertaining and educating insight into the spectacular financial crisis of 2008, Inside Job gives you a more analytical perspective. Narrated by Matt Damon, it features extensive interviews from key men in financial markets, academicians, politicians and more, to explain the mammoth $20 Trillion in losses caused by a global financial failure.
A movie that will take you from America to England, Singapore, France, China and even Iceland, to tell you how it all went down in a heap.
