7 Thrilling Sci-Fi Action Adventure Movies like Voyagers (2021)
1 Lucy (2014)
Lucy sort of takes an opposite run at the plot you saw in Voyagers. Scarlett Johansson is Lucy, a unsuspecting woman who’s belly is cut open to sew in drugs that she needs to suddenly deliver as a coerced drug mule. But, the botched surgery sets off an extraordinary reaction in Lucy’s brain. Slowly but surely, she begins to harness the full power of her brain. As her brain goes into overdrive and she completely loses her touch with emotions, she becomes something that defies all logic as we know it. Morgan Freeman plays Professor Norman, an advanced expert on neurological studies. He is the only one who can somewhat relate to Lucy’s incomprehensibly evolving mind.
Lucy is a fantastic watch and makes for a great thriller to follow up Voyagers. Scarlett Johansson is brilliant as Lucy. The movie has over 450,000 votes at IMDB and has garnered a very respectable 6.4 rating since 2014. There’s high energy action almost throughout the movie.
2 Passengers (2016)
A team of astronauts were supposed to wake up in the next century, in another planet. Their mission? To explore other planets for colonization by the people of Earth. But, something goes terribly wrong with the sleep pod designed to let them hibernate. Their hibernation is abruptly broken up and they wake up 90 years too soon. How will they cope with having to live 90 years in isolation? Will they turn against each other? Getting romantically involved with one another only complicates the issue further.
But, just like in Voyagers, the two astronauts turn their challenges into opportunities, to do their best to complete their mission. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are brilliant as the two lonely astronauts aboard a massive spaceship that gives you many stunning visuals.
The imagery is brilliant. The plot is taut. Passengers will take you to another realm in space. But, at the core of the film is our fall back on emotions and instinct that we are so familiar with.
If you need a bit of romance to power you through a sci-fi movie, this movie has that as well. The chemistry between Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt is something you will certainly appreciate.
3 Total Recall (2012)
Colin Farrell is Douglas Quaid, a factory worker. He lives in a time where he can borrow memories from a company called Rekall, to live out vacations in his mind. But, during one such borrowed mind vacation, he realizes that he is a spy on the run. The movie is about his struggles to live through the borrowed memories. But, the reality distorts around him and takes him to a place where his two lives are blurred and merged.
There’s high octane action in a very futuristic world. Kate Beckinsale is Colin Farrell’s loving wife. The movie also stars Jessica Biel and Bryan Cranston in leading roles.
It has a very respectable 6.3 rating at IMDB, after almost 250,000 votes were cast by its fans.
4 Ad Astra (2019)
Did you miss Ad Astra on your movie radar when it came out in 2019? Starring Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones, it was a big budget movie ($90 Million) that wasn’t nearly as recognized as it should have been.
Brad Pitt is Roy McBride, an astronaut on a mission to understand and counter a massive threat to planet Earth. What makes the movie intriguing is that the looming problem that threatens planet earth has something to do with Roy’s father’s previous mission to space, one that took place 30 years in the past.
What will Roy find up there? Will it shock him? What can he do to set things right? It’s a movie with high strung human emotions. Brad Pitt is brilliant as Roy and Tommy Lee Jones excels in his role as Roy’s father. A movie with stunning visuals and nail biting outer space action sequences.
It has a 6.5 rating at IMDB, with over 200,000 votes.
5 Predestination (2014)
Ethan Hawke is a temporal agent. What does that mean? He goes back in time to prevent crime before it happens. If you need a minute to wrap your head around that, imagine what the barkeep who Ethan Hawke plays has to go through when he has to chase after a criminal who knows he is coming from the future. Predestination is a Spierig brothers movie (Michael and Peter).
There’s time travel. The plot also uses love, identity crisis and fate as its primary storytelling pillars, giving you a great balance between a futuristic sci-fi world with its roots planted in basic human emotions. Ethan Hawke does a phenomenal job. But, the real star is Sarah Snook who plays a pivotal character of an unmarried mother.
Predestination has a very impressive 7.5 rating at IMDB, with 255,000+ votes.
6 Oblivion (2013)
Tom Cruise is Jack, a drone repairman part of a mop up crew on planet Earth. After a devastating war with aliens, Earth has been evacuated. But, when Jack comes in contact with a survivor of a crashed spacecraft, he begins to question everything he knew about the war. Was he lied to? Maybe everyone on earth was lied to? Was life on earth just a memory?
Just like with most Tom Cruise movies, this one packs in a lot of high-octane action. The music scores are brilliant too, keeping the adrenaline jumping. Oblivion has a cult following amongst recent sci-fi movies. And, it’s no surprise that almost half a million of its fans gave it a 7.0 rating at IMDB.
7 Elysium (2013)
The year is 2154. The human race is divided by wealth. The very rich have long left the planet, to live in a pristine man made world called Elysium. At Elysium, there’s no suffering, no pain and no sickness. The unlucky ones have to stay back on a ruined planet Earth, desperately fighting for limited resources, while being enslaved by emotionless robots. Max (Matt Damon) is one such survivor on planet earth.
People cursed to live on Earth make daring attempt to illegally enter Elysium. But, they are stopped with drastic measures by Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster). She will do anything, however inhumane, to protect Elysium from illegal immigration.
Can Max infiltrate Elysium? Can he bring equality to the human race? There’s action, adventure and plenty of sci-fi on offer. This movie has a 6.6 rating at IMDB, with more than 400,000 votes.
