In The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, a teen couple live the same day over and over again. They use the time loop as an opportunity to identify everything that is perfect about the day. It is a sweet movie about love, romance, humor, empathy and friendship. Though the movie gets off to a rather slow start, it more than makes up for it as it plays along. Many critics shunned this movie calling it a Groundhog day trope. It’s an unfair critique. The movie offers a fresh new perspective on the repeating time loop storyline. 1 Palm Springs (2020)
A reluctant maid of honor strikes up friendship and romance with the best man who just knows how to say all the wrong things. Where this wedding comedy takes an unexpected turn is when these two live the same day over and again, infinitely. At first, they are confused, then immensely frustrated. Then they begin to get on with it. It is a hilarious watch that also gives you something to ponder about life and what it all means.
Andy Samberg as the gregarious best man and Cristin Milioti as the frustrated maid of honor deliver fantastic performances in this very easy to watch movie. Full of good laughs.
2 50 First Dates (2004)
Henry (Adam Sandler) has commitment issues. But, when he meets Lucy (Drew Barrymore), he falls in love, head over heels. The problem? Lucy has short term memory loss. After the first date, it’s back to, well, another first date.
Henry has to woo Lucy over and over again in this hilarious time-loop comedy that also features Rob Schneider in a supporting funny performance.
Drew Barrymore is charming as the forgetful Lucy and Adam Sandler pulls off quite a romantic performance. A feel-good comedy that will leave you smiling for sure.
3 The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
The Fault in Our Stars doesn’t have anything to do with time-loops. But, it’s easily one of the most charming and sweet teen romcoms ever made, something that it shares with The Map of Tiny Perfect Things.
Two innocent teenagers meet in a cancer support group. They immediately recognize that they have a lot in common, both in terms of likes and dislikes. One is stuck to an oxygen tank and the other has had his leg removed and replaced by a prosthetic leg. Despite these setbacks, they are just as much as in love as any high school sweethearts could be, if not more. One of the most watched and appreciated romantic comedies of 2014.
4 Before I Fall (2017)
Ok, a little disclaimer. Before I Fall isn’t a sweet romantic comedy. It instead adopts a rather dark take on the infinite time-loop theme. Yet, it is a highly recommended watch as it offers a very interesting perspective on how one might use an endlessly repeating day to figure out what happened to their life.
Samantha (Zoey Deutch) relives February 12th, the day she died, over and over again. She uses the infinite time-loop to figure out who’s who in her life. Her friends? Her boyfriend? Are they all the people she really thought them to be?
A great thriller with fantastic acting and a very engaging plot.
5 The Final Girls (2015)
Max (Taissa Farmiga) watches an 80’s slasher movie with her friends. It features her late mother. Just as they begin to watch the movie, they are time-travelled right into the silver screen, after a freak fire. Now, what happens in the movie is happening in their lives!
Mom and daughter re-unite in this comedy drama where they fight off a machete wielding serial killer, against the backdrop of the 80’s.
Who will be left standing, to escape this time-loop inside of a movie! That’s the plot of the aptly named The Final Girls.
6 Easy A (2010)
This isn’t a time-loop movie. It isn’t exactly a rom-com either. But, it is very funny nonetheless. Emma Stone plays Olive, a goody two shoes high school student. But, to advance her social and financial standing, she mischievously spreads a rumor about her virginity, herself. There’s a lot of funny characters, a lot of naivety and a liberal dose of immoral situations, a teen comedy staple. But, it all just adds up to good fun in the end. Emma Stone’s performance is brilliant and this was definitely one of her top claim-to-fame movies.
There’s even an appearance by Amanda Bynes who pretty much defined American teenage movies in her heyday.
7 Groundhog Day (1993)
You didn’t think this list wouldn’t have Groundhog Day, did you? This is the mother of all stuck in a time loop movies! Starring Bill Murray, this is a hilarious laugh riot from start to end. Phil (Murray) is a weather forecaster. He hates groundhog day, the day a groundhog comes or doesn’t come out of hiding to announce an early spring. Just imagine his plight when the day he so dreads repeats itself over and over again. All the same people. The same incidents. Same stupid excitement about what he calls a rat coming out of a hole.
You will laugh all the way through the movie, enjoying Phil’s misery. If time-loop movies are your thing, this should be the first thing on movies to see after watching The Map of Tiny Perfect Things!
